WALLA WALLA

THE FOUNDRY,
WALLA WALLA

03   /   15   /   2019

The Foundry is in the western region of Walla Walla, Washington, near the city center and with a business focuses on manufacturing unique art. The facilities of the campus were expanding and introducing new areas for the employees. The owners of the company wanted a campus where a new parking lot made of permeable paving, a wide entry for commercial trucks to enter without interfering with the Foundries Operations, a communal sitting area, where employees could come to take breaks and a new walk way from the parking lot to the foundry to separate the “outside world” with the making of art. The redesign of the Courtyard was the main interest of the client, where a communal gathering space where employees and visitors alike would feel welcome to the site.

The Courtyard design borrows motifs from Japanese garden designs with Bamboo plantings, rock gardens and asymmetrical orientation within the circulation of the Courtyard. The Pergola canopy comes from European design with the benches fasted to the extended canopy of the administration building, featuring grapes that tie into Greek wine making, which the Foundry also distills on the premise. The Courtyard was reimagined to fit the art and culture of what the Foundry stands for as a business. Combining two unique continents performs an area of peace and meditation for the workers, visitors and owners of the Foundry.
