The Whitman County and the Pullman Parks & Recreation department wanted to design a park for the citizens of Pullman, Washington. The Parks and Recreation department have been looking to acquire a piece of land that has been out of commission by BNSF Railway and AMTRAK, that way the community could use the space that is on a flood zone. Through the careful pickings of flood and drought tolerate plants, the area would be a suitable environment for opportunities for recreation. The park design focused on key innovative aspects for the proposed sports facilities that include small structures, sport complexes, and increased parking stalls for the patrons of the parks during sporting seasons.
The Pullman playfields location is on a flood plain where hydrology tends to be an issue during the Spring season and with the fact that the area was once a fueling station for the WSDOT, which left contaminated. Through the installment of ecological properties that can help wash and heal the soil that the Playfields would sit. With the development of bioswales, permeable paving and selection of plants to clean the soil, but to also to manage sites hydrology.
