DAYTON-WAITSBURG

INTERCITY TRAILSYSTEM,
DAYTON-WAITSBURG

12   /   10   /   2019

The towns of Dayton and Waitsburg applied for a land grant to interconnect their two towns with a trail system. The two towns are north of Walla Walla, Washington, with a rich cultural and natural history that these two towns share. The proposition of connecting the two towns through a trail system will host sense of community and bring the people of the neighboring towns together. The design is proposed to begin at the courthouse, reach all the way out to the historic landmarks along the trail to serve as a way find. The historic elements of the town serve as a way to establish points along the rail line to design bridges, small structures and more iconic elements to integrate the community in a sense of place.

The two towns of Dayton-Waitsburg gathered for a community design charrette, with the purpose to connect the two towns through a trail system. The community looked at focus points within Dayton on where the trail should begin and how to connect the two towns together. The start of the trail begins the link in the Downtown district and will follow along the train tracks introducing a Rails with Trails project. The focus of the plan would pass through the state legislation to offer a solution connecting the trail system and giving the community an opportunity for all to trail between towns safely. The section-perspectives display the connection after the proposed pedestrian bridge, connecting into commercial street and creating a Woonerf system. The Woonerf system would create a shared road system, between vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians, so that cost would not be an issue in the design of the trailhead connection.
